L-Glutamine supports immunity and hormonal balance under heavy training

Juvi · April 12, 2026

A randomised crossover trial in 21 national-level combat-sport athletes tested L-glutamine at 0.3 g/kg/day (around 18–21 g/day) for three weeks after intensive training.

Immune defence held up. Glutamine significantly raised salivary secretory IgA, the body's first line of mucosal immune defence, along with nitric oxide, and significantly reduced upper-respiratory-tract infections versus placebo.

Hormones stayed balanced. The placebo group slid toward catabolic overtraining (testosterone down, cortisol up); the glutamine group kept a healthier testosterone-to-cortisol ratio and better mood.

Honest dose note: this trial used ~18–21 g/day, far above Flora's 3.15 g. Whether the same immune benefits occur at 3.15 g/day hasn't been established in this group.
